Fort Stewart's Eleven Gates Change Where You Should Look

The Installation Itself

Fort Stewart lies primarily in Liberty and Bryan counties, with smaller portions reaching into Evans, Long, and Tattnall counties, runs about 39 miles east to west and 19 miles north to south, is "the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River," built in January 1941, and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division, all per Wikipedia's entry on Fort Stewart (opens in a new tab). None of that is a small-town gate you drive through on the way in, it's closer in scale to a small county with its own internal geography.

Which Gate You'll Actually Use

Fort Stewart has eleven access points, not one main gate, per the garrison's own visitor information page (opens in a new tab). Five run 24 hours a day: Gate 3 (Capt. Maurice Britt), Gate 4 (Sfc. John W. Marshall), Gate 5 (Cpl. Hiroshi Miyamura), Gate 8 (Pfc. John L. Barkley), and Gate 9 (Wright Airfield). The rest keep limited hours, some considerably so: Gate 1 runs 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily; Gate 7 runs 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and is closed weekends; the commercial gate, 7c, runs 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday; Gate 4C runs 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on weekdays only; Gate 4B is closed; and Gate 2 is closed indefinitely. A unit working out of one of the always-open gates and a unit working out of Gate 1 or Gate 7 are, in practice, dealing with two different sets of hours for what gets called the same installation. Gate hours shift with the installation's force protection posture and are current only as of this page's own review date, so confirm the specific gate directly before planning a commute around it.

Everyone 18 or older needs a government-issued ID to get on post, driver's license or passport, per the same page. A dependent military ID gets a family member through without a separate pass. Anyone without a military ID has three ways in: a background check at the Visitor Control Center, online pre-registration through pass.aie.army.mil (opens in a new tab) good for up to 60 days, or in-lane vetting at the gate itself. Gate 4C is the one exception, it cannot issue a visitor pass in-lane, so a different gate or pre-registering ahead of time is the way in there.

None of this is really about Fort Stewart as a single point on a map. It's about which specific gate a report date actually points to, and that's worth confirming before drive time to any neighborhood becomes part of the decision.

Housing: Off-Post and On-Post

Fort Stewart's own Housing Services Office (opens in a new tab) handles off-post rentals, not purchases: it keeps a list of local rentals, reviews a lease before a tenant signs it, and mediates disputes between a tenant and a landlord after the fact. On-post family housing is a different track entirely. That's a rental relationship with the housing company, not a purchase, and it sits outside anything this site covers. Worth knowing which track a specific family is on before comparing it to buying off post at all.

Schools

Which specific school a given off-post address is zoned for is a Liberty County question, not a Fort Stewart one, worth confirming directly rather than assuming it from a subdivision's name or a listing description.

If You're the One In-Processing

For the service member in uniform, in-processing itself runs through the Marne Reception Center (opens in a new tab), Building 206 at 686 Harman Avenue, which operates 24 hours a day. The garrison's own page is direct about the one requirement that isn't optional: everyone reporting in has to present in person "at 0615 for accountability," not just check in online. What This Means for Where You Buy

None of this settles where to actually live. That depends on which gate someone will actually use, how firm the report date is, and which specific address a Liberty County school zone covers, not on the installation's name alone.
