Commuting to Gulfstream
Where to Live if You Work at Gulfstream
The Gulfstream campus is at 500 Gulfstream Road, per the Georgia Historical Society (opens in a new tab), next to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, per BE&K Building Group (opens in a new tab). Port Wentworth and Pooler are inside a ten minute drive. Rincon is about twenty minutes. Springfield and Guyton are around half an hour. Statesboro is closer to an hour.
Those are off peak numbers. The rest of this page is about why the off peak number is not the one you will actually live with.
I worked at Gulfstream before I sold real estate. That is the only reason this page exists, because the drive times are public and the part that matters is not.
Drive times to the Gulfstream campus
| From | County | Drive | Distance | Main route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Port Wentworth | Chatham | 5 min | 2.3 mi | Crossgate Rd and Gulfstream Rd |
| Pooler | Chatham | 10 min | 5.8 mi | Gulfstream Rd |
| Rincon | Effingham | 20 min | 12.7 mi | GA-21 |
| Richmond Hill | Bryan | 23 min | 19.4 mi | I-95 |
| Springfield | Effingham | 30 min | 20.1 mi | GA-21 |
| Guyton | Effingham | 33 min | 23.3 mi | Midland Rd |
| Brooklet | Bulloch | 49 min | 37.8 mi | US-80 |
| Statesboro | Bulloch | 57 min | 53.2 mi | GA-67 and I-16 |
Richmond Hill is roughly the same distance as Springfield but on I-95 rather than GA-21. A completely different commute character in exchange for a similar number.

The two things a drive time will not tell you
Which department you are in. The campus is not one building and not one gate. Depending on where you badge in and where you end up parking, add or subtract roughly ten minutes from every number in that table. A ten minute difference on a twenty minute commute is not a rounding error, it is half your drive.
When your shift starts. If you are on first shift you will meet traffic in both directions, going in and coming home. Until you have learned your own route, give yourself a fifteen minute cushion, and closer to twenty for the first couple of weeks. You will tighten that up once you know which merge and which light actually cost you.
The heaviest of it, in my experience, is getting into the department on the Pooler side next to the airport. Traffic merges in from both directions there, off I-95 and off Pooler Parkway at the same time, and it stacks. If you end up badged in over there, plan your drive around that merge rather than around the mileage, because the mileage will lie to you.
Common questions
What is the closest town to the Gulfstream campus?
Of the eight towns on this page, Port Wentworth, at about 2.3 miles and a five minute drive.
How far is Pooler from Gulfstream?
About 5.8 miles, roughly ten minutes using Gulfstream Road rather than Pooler Parkway.
Is Rincon too far to commute to Gulfstream?
Twenty minutes off peak, up GA-21. Whether it is too far depends far more on your shift and your department than on the distance.
Can you commute to Gulfstream from Statesboro?
Yes, but plan on roughly an hour each way via GA-67 and I-16. Brooklet cuts that to about fifty minutes on US-80.
How bad is the traffic getting into Gulfstream?
Heavier than the mileage suggests, and heaviest on the Pooler side next to the airport, where traffic merges in from both I-95 and Pooler Parkway at once. On first shift, budget an extra fifteen minutes each way until you have learned your own route.
If you are moving here for the job
Start with your department and your shift, not with a town. The difference between a ten minute drive and a forty five minute drive is the single largest lifestyle variable in this decision.
